The Flymo Turbo Lite 330 is a basic budget hover mower designed for small gardens. With a narrow cutting width of 33 cm (13 inches) but a relatively powerful 1150 Watt motor is it any good ?

Unlike some of the other budget Flymos this one has a metal blade which we prefer as they are more durable than plastic blades. If you’ve got the sort of gardens where you might get stones in the lawn then this is a good thing.

The cutting height ranges between 10 mm and 30 mm and is adjusted by adding or removing spacers between the blade and cutting deck. Whilst this isn’t as easy as pulling a lever, because of the inherent design limitations of a hover mower without wheels it’s the only way to do it. Thankfully you’ll only need to set the cutting height once or twice per season so it’s not a big issue.

The handle fits to the top of the cutting deck and offers a good range of movement so it should suit users of all sorts of different heights. However, we’d prefer it if it dropped right down so that the mower could be stored flat against the wall. The handle does fold in half for storage but as many potential owners will have small gardens and probably small sheds, it does take up more space than it needs to.

Sitting on top of the handle are the controls which consists of a safety button which needs to pressed before the mower will start and two handles which turn on the motor. Only one of these needs to be held in for the mower to run so it’s suitable for both left and right-handed users.

So how does it cut ?

The finish was reasonable given that it doesn’t have a grass box so the cuttings are left behind. We found that going over the lawn twice gave a better finish as the cuttings from the first cut where picked up and chopped into much smaller pieces the second time.

This was true except on long grass where it struggled – this mower is definately more suited to short grass than long – where several more cuts were necessary to get a reasonable finish.

The mower was surprising lightweight and therefore easy to move around. Although designed for small gardens we can see this being used by people will sloping areas of grass where there main mower is just too heavy.

A potential limitation may be the length of the mains cable. At 12 metres long we feel that it’s just too short and, as it’s moulded in, difficult to replace should the cable get damaged. Whilst you can use an extension cable, adding just a few more metres to the cable surely wouldn’t have cost Flymo all that much !

So is it any good ?

For a small garden, where the grass is cut weekly and you don’t want stripes then this will serve your needs. It’s light, compact and fairly easy to clean and store, and leaves a good finish. For the price, it’s worth buying.
