OUR RATING ★★★★☆

With its 40 cm (16 inch) cutting width the Flymo Turbo 400 is designed for small to medium sized gardens.  It’s a fairly basic hover mower but has a reasonably 1500 Watt which drives a metal cutting blade and five cutting heights.  Sounds like it ticks the right boxes, so is it any good ?

Having previously taken a look at the Flymo Micro Lite with its plastic blades, we were relieved to see that the Flymo Turbo 400 is blessed with proper metal blades.  If your lawn is likely to have stones on it – perhaps due to dogs or children placing them there – then this will be a good thing !

Unlike some of the smaller Flymo hover mowers, this one has a decent range of cutting height adjustment from 15 mm to 40 mm in five distinct steps.  The cutting height is adjusted by adding or removing one or more spacers under the blade.  It’s not the easiest way of doing it but for a mower without wheels it’s the only way.

Adjusting the cutting height probably isn’t something that you’ll do all that often so we can live with the inconvenience because the Flymo Turbo 400 has something up its sleeve.

It’s blessed with a 1500 Watt electric motor which is a fraction more powerful than the 1450 Watt motor found in the Flymo Glider 330 but, as the Flymo Turbo 400 doesn’t have a grass box, it’s starting weight is 3 kilograms lighter.  And as you use it, with no grass box to fill, it doesn’t get any heavier.

This means that it hovers and glides far better than we expected.  In fact, it seems to ride that little bit higher and, as a result, can cope with rough ground much better than some of the other Flymo hover mowers that we’ve tested.

Of course the downside of not having a grass box is that it doesn’t collect the grass cuttings but going over the lawn a second time allowed the combination of the powerful motor and metal blade to mulch the cuttings.  This isn’t as time consuming as it sounds because it glides so effortlessly.  What also impressed us was that it even managed to cut through grass over 30 cm high without complaint.

It does suffer from the usual Flymo hover mower tendency to throw the cuttings around but at least it doesn’t even try to pick them up.

If we had to complain then the supplied 12 metre cable is just a little short for our liking and there’s nowhere to store it

Although this is a reasonably good electric lawn mower in its own right, where we can see it really shining is on areas that your roller mower won’t touch, perhaps rough areas of lawn around trees and under shrubs.

Overall, the Flymo Turbo 400 is a joy to use.  It’s light, hovers well and, thanks to its metal blade and powerful motor, cuts the grass well even if it’s long or wet.  Sure it doesn’t pick up the cuttings but then it doesn’t pretend to.

If you want a stripe on your lawn then this is not the mower for you but if you want a tough mower that’ll cut its way through most things, then this could be your machine.
