We’re fans of Flymo four wheel mowers but the Flymo Easiglide 300 is a conventional Flymo hover mower intended for small gardens.  However, due to their design, these have a tendency to throw the grass cuttings around rather than pick them up.

So does the Flymo Easiglide 300 do the same as its close relatives ?

Sadly, yes.  That’s not to say that it’s a bad lawn mower, it’s just that Flymo are asking it to do the near impossible.  On smooth lawns it does cut the grass very well and it does manage to pick up most of the cuttings but here’s why it fails to collect ALL of them.

Hover mowers work by sucking air in through the a slot on the rear of the mower.  This air goes through the grass box and into the top of the fan which blows air out under the mower to provide the cushion that it rides on.

Now the air that gets sucked in through the back is how the cuttings are collected but the slot only cover half the width of the mower so, at best, it can only pick up half the grass cuttings left behind by the blades.  The problem is that the cuttings aren’t all deposited at the back of the mower but are fired out in all directions so only around a quarter are fired out of the back.

If your lawn is flat and surrounded by objects that you can easily sweep the grass cuttings from such as patios, fences and walls then this may not be a problem.  If your lawn is surrounded by flower beds or you’ve got a pond then they will get showered in grass cuttings.

If you’re not keen on this – and we’re not – then we’d recommend that you take a look at either the Flymo Easimo or the Bosch Rotak 32 Ergoflex – both are four wheel rotary mowers which suck the grass cuttings up through the blade rather than through a slot in the back.

So what’s the Flymo Easiglide 300 like to use ?

Well, as it arrives fully assembled you can be cutting the grass within minutes of opening the box.  Like all Flymo electric hover mowers, adjusting the cutting height is fiddly and requires removing the blade and adding or removing spacers.  It’s a clunky system but it works and allows the height to be changed between 12 mm and 32 mm in four steps.

The 10 metre power cable that comes with the Flymo Easiglide 300 is a little short but as this designed for small gardens it might be long enough although you’ll probably still need an extension lead.  The handle folds for storage and the cable can be stored in the grass box when not in use.  At 8 kg it’s very light and easy to carry around the garden and up and down steps.

On perfectly flat lawns the Flymo Easiglide 300 actually cuts surprisingly well but it struggles if there are lumps and bumps as they disturb the air cushion that it rides on and, in extreme cases, you’ll find yourself literally shoving it along.  Lawn edges also present a problem – as soon as the edge of the mower moves off the edge of the lawn, the air cushion disappears and it tips over.

If you’ve got a small, smooth lawn and aren’t too worried about sweeping grass cuttings off your patio, walls and fences, then the Flymo Easiglide 300 isn’t a bad electric mower for the money.  But for a few pounds less you can pick up the much better Flymo Easimo or a few more pounds you can get the five star Bosch Rotak 32 Ergoflex.  We know what we’d do.
