Flymo Chevron 34VC Rear Roller Electric Lawnmower

Flymo Chevron 34VC Rear Roller Electric Lawnmower

PRO’s: easy height adjustment, excellent cut, excellent cutting collection

CON’s: can’t cut right to the edge

VERDICT: Flymo have made a mower which gives Bosch a run for its money!

OUR RATING ★★★★☆

Although Flymo are best known for their hover mowers, they also make a wide range of wheeled rotary mowers such as the Flymo Chevron 34VC.  Because it sits on wheels rather than riding on a cushion of air then this should cut the grass as well as the Bosch Rotak family of electric lawnmowers does.

But does it ?

We’re pleased to say that the Flymo Chevron 34VC restores our faith in Flymo !  It cuts the grass very well, picks it all up (hurray !) and, thanks to it’s built-in rear roller, it also leaves a pleasant stripe on the lawn although this does tend to fade after a day or so but that’s down to the lack of weight of the mower.  If you want a long lasting stripe then you’ll need a heavy mower to flatten the grass.

The reason that it works so well compared to something like the Flymo Glidemaster 380 hover mower is that the weight of the Chevron 34VC rests on its wheels.  This means that the as blade rotates it sucks the cuttings off the ground and blows them into the grassbox – seems pretty obvious, right ?

On a hover mower such as the Glidemaster the blade works in the opposite way and blows air out of the bottom of the mower to lift it clear of the ground on a cushion of air.  The side-effect of this is to scatter the cuttings in all directions.  These are then (in theory) sucked into the rear of the grass box as the mower moves forward.

Now in the case of something like the Flymo Turbo Lite 330 which lacks a grass box then you expect the cuttings to go everywhere but where there’s a grass box fitted (as is the case with the Glidemaster) you expect it pick them up.

In a nutshell, the four wheeled Flymo Chevron 34VC is a far better mower than any of the hover Flymo’s with grassboxes.

For it’s size it’s got a powerful 1400 Watt motor which we found worked well even on long, damp grass.  The 40 litre collection box is a generous size and the powerful motor really packs the cuttings in so much so that we had trouble getting them out at times as the grass box is a rather awkward shape.

We found it extremely easy to use as well.  Adjusting the cutting height is a doddle – one lever allows all four wheels to be adjusted at the same time through five different cutting heights ranging from 20 mm to 60 mm.  Compared to the faff needed with Flymo’s hover mowers where you have to take the blade off and add or remove spacers it’s a dream to adjust !

Another nice touch is the central carrying handle which allows you to carry the mower with one hand.  If you’ve got steps up or down to your lawn then you’ll really appreciate that.  It’s lightweight, easy to push too and very manoeuvrable.

Downsides ?

Well, it doesn’t cut as close to the edge as the Bosch Rotak mowers do.  The power cable is not detachable and the cable storage could be neater as the cable just hangs down and it’s not that long either at 12 metres.  Although designed for small to medium sized gardens, you definitely need an extension lead.

Like all electric lawn mowers it arrives partly assembled and we found the assembly instructions to be less than clear but a glance at the box showed what we were aiming for.  Within 10 minutes we had the grass box put together and the height adjustable, folding handle fitted.

A nice touch is that there’s a window into the grass box so that you can see when it needs to be emptied although we found that the use of coloured plastic made it a little tricky to see inside in less than brilliant sunlight.

Overall this is very good lawn mower and we’d definitely recommend it over any of Flymo’s hover mowers such as the Flymo Glidemaster 380.  It’s also a worthy rival to the Bosch Rotak range of mowers.

That said, personally, we’d still go for the Bosch mowers but if you’re loyal to the Flymo brand then you won’t be disappointed – you’ll love it !
