The Bosch Rotak 43 Ergoflex is the largest model in the Bosch Rotak family of electric mowers and is designed for medium to large gardens.  We make no secret of our love for these mowers (all of the ones that we’ve reviewed have received five star reviews) but is the daddy of the family just as good as the rest ?

Visually it looks extremely similar to other members of the Bosch Rotak family – it’s just a little larger to accommodate the larger blade which gives a cutting width of 43 cm (17 inches).

With 10 different cutting height positions between 20 mm and 70 mm adjusted by a single lever, inset front wheels to allow it to cut right up to the edge of your lawn and innovative grass combs which pull the grass into the blades, the cut on the Bosch Rotak 43 Ergoflex is just as good as the other members of the family.

The built-in rear roller leaves a lovely stripe on the lawn as well as helping to improve the stability of the lawn mower making it tip less.  This, in turn, reduces the likelihood of scalping rougher parts of your lawn.

To ensure that it’s got enough power the Bosch Rotak 43 Ergoflex has an 1800 Watt electric motor – the most powerful in the Rotak range – and drives the metal blade through a gearbox which ensures that the blade speed remains constant at 3600 rpm.  Bosch call this their PowerDrive system and it certainly seems to work – we had no problems cutting long damp grass.

In use we found it as good as the other members of the Bosch Rotak family – the cut was excellent and there were no grass cuttings left behind instead they were tightly packed into the grass box.

Although it’s large, the Bosch Rotak 43 only weight 12.4 kg and is easy to move around thanks to the smooth running wheels and the ergonomic height adjustable handle which provides eight different hand positions whilst you’re cutting grass.  If you need to carry it up and down steps there’s a built-in carrying handle on the top of the mower which makes carrying it relatively easy given it’s weight and bulk.

Like other members of the family the Bosch Rotak 43 Ergoflex comes partly assembled but it only takes fifteen minutes or so to put the two halves of the grass box together and fit the folding handle.

If we had to criticise anything it would be that it shares the same 50 litre grass box with the slightly smaller Bosch Rotak 40 Ergoflex – we would have liked to see a slightly larger one given the larger cutting width.  Oh and, like all other Bosch Rotaks, you can’t see into the grass box to see if it needs emptying but you’ll soon learn to judge when it needs emptying.

The largest mower in the Bosch Rotak family gets the longest power cable (15 metres) but you’ll still need an extension lead if you’re cutting a large garden.

We’d actually consider this is a good replacement for a small petrol lawnmower – it’s certainly a lot lighter (around half the weight) and cheaper to run as there’s no annual service to pay for – but you will have to get use to the trailing cable if you switch from a petrol mower.

The trailing cable isn’t really a problem though – we could only see it being irritating if you had a lawn with lots of trees and shrubs in it.  In this case, Bosch make a cordless, battery operated version (the Bosch Rotak 43 LI Ergoflex) which might be more suitable.

Overall though, like the rest of the Bosch Rotak family, this is an impressive mower which cuts the grass beautifully, picks up all the cuttings and is a joy to use.  For a medium to large garden, it’s the best you can get.
