OUR RATING ★★★★★

With its 37 cm (14 inch) cutting width the Bosch Rotak 37 Ergoflex is perfectly suited for medium sized gardens.  We’re big fans of it’s close relatives the smaller Bosch Rotak 34 Ergoflex and the larger Bosch Rotak 40 Ergoflex so does the Rotak 37 offer any surprises ?

Thankfully the answer is no …

Like other members of the Bosch Rotak family, the Bosch Rotak 37 Ergoflex has inset front wheels and innovative grass combs which direct the grass under the blades which allows it to cut up close to walls and the edge of the lawn.

When cut with other brands of mower, we have to get the strimmer out to tidy up the edges but with the Bosch Rotak 37 Ergoflex we still need to, but we only need to trim one or two really tricky areas where the mower can’t cut.  Along walls and the bottom of fences it manages to get right up to the edges which is a serious time saver.

The Rotak 37 also has the PowerDrive motor system which uses a gearbox to keep the metal blade spinning at 3600 rpm regardless of the length of the grass that you’re trying to cut.  At 1400 Watts output the motor is a little more powerful than the Rotak 34 (1300 Watts) but not as powerful as the Rotak 40’s 1700 Watt electric motor.

Given the difference in cutting size between the three models we would have expected to see a 1500 Watt motor in the Bosch Rotak 37 Ergoflex but the 1400 Watt coped well with long grass and really packed the cuttings into the 40 litre grass box which it shares with the smaller Bosch Rotak 34.

Also carried over from other members of the Rotak family are the Ergoflex handles which provide eight different hand positions which makes using the mower as enjoyable as it can be.  This also makes the Bosch Rotak 37 Ergoflex equally well suited to both left and right-handed users.

The cutting height can be adjusted in ten distinct steps with just one hand using a single lever.  The lowest cutting height of 20 mm is perfect for totally flat lawns whilst the highest cutting height of 70 mm is ideal for a first rough cut over areas that haven’t been cut for ages. For regular weekly cuts, you’ll probably settle for somewhere in the middle.

Like other members of the Rotak family, the Bosch Rotak 37 Ergoflex has a built-in rear roller which leaves a pleasing stripe on the lawn which, given its relatively light weight of just under 11 kilograms, lasts for quite a while.

It arrives partially assembled, needing only the grass box and the handle to be put together but this takes around 15 minutes or so and is fairly straight forward.  The handle also fold down for storage when not in use saving precious space in your shed or garage.

Downsides to the Bosch Rotak 37 Ergoflex are thankfully few and far between.

If we were being picky we’d like to see a slightly larger grassbox than the 40 litre one supplied and, like all other Rotak mowers, you can’t see into the grass box to see if it needs to be emptied or not but in practice, once you get the hang of it, you’ll learn to judge when it needs emptying.

Overall the Bosch Rotak 37 Ergoflex can more than hold its own.  It cuts the grass well, picks up just about all of the cuttings and can cut right to the edge of lawns, alongside walls and fences.  It’s lightweight too and the Ergoflex handles make the chore of cutting the grass just about as enjoyable as it can be.

If you’ve got a medium sized garden this is the electric lawn mower to get although if your lawn is full of shrubs and trees which mean you have to snake the cable around them then you might want to consider the Bosch Rotak 37 LI cordless mower version.  It cuts just as well but is quite a bit more expensive.
