The Bosch Rotak 34 Ergoflex is the smaller version of the Bosch Rotak 40 Ergoflex which we’ve already tested and absolutely loved – we awarded it five stars out of five. It’s said that good things come in small packages, so how does the baby brother compare against its illustrious bigger sibling ?

With a 34 cm (13 inch) cutting width the Bosch Rotak 34 Ergoflex is designed for small to medium sized gardens. And like its bigger brother it’s a four wheeled rotary mower with a built-in rear roller and if you’re impatient to find out how it cuts, we’ll put you out of your misery.

It’s bloody brilliant !

The powerful 1400 Watt motor cuts through long grass with ease and blows the cuttings to the very back of the 40 litre grass box leaving none behind on the lawn. And thanks to the grass combs at the front of the cutting deck combined with the inset front wheels it can right up to the lawn edges too.

The built-in roller leaves a lovely stripe which doesn’t last as long as the one produced by its big brother but then the Bosch Rotak 34 Ergoflex is slightly kilograms lighter at 11 kg.

We’re also glad to see that the cutting height adjuster is exactly the same as on the bigger version. One lever sets the cutting height between 20 mm and 70 mm in 10 steps.

In terms of assembly, it’s pretty easy. Out of the box comes the mower body, the handle and the grass box in two halves. All that’s required is the attachment of the handle via some self-tapping screws (see our advice on this in the review of it’s big brother) and the clipping together of the two halves of the grassbox. In total this took us around 15 minutes from cutting the tape on the box.

Whilst on the subject of the handle, Bosch make much of the Ergoflex multi-position handles which offer a variety of hand positions whilst cutting. We like them as they enabled us to change hand positions to get the most comfortable position mid-cut.

The handle also folds for storage to make a compact package which’ll fit into the corner of most sheds.

All in all, like it’s big brother the Bosch Rotak 40 Ergoflex, this is an outstanding mower. It’s quiet, lightweight yet well-built and the quality of the cut is outstanding. We really struggled to find any grass cuttings that it left behind on our test lawn.

If you’ve got a small to medium-sized garden buy the Bosch Rotak 34 Ergoflex, you won’t regret it !
