The Bosch Rotak 32R is the smallest of the Bosch range of electric lawnmowers and is intended for use in small gardens .  It’s also one of just two in the Bosch family that aren’t members of the ErgoFlex group.  But is it a problem ?

We’re big fans of the Bosch range of electric lawnmowers having given 5 star ratings to various models of the Bosch Ergoflex range from the Bosch Rotak 34 Ergoflex to the Bosch Rotak 40 Ergoflex.

All Bosch electric lawnmowers are extremely well made and the Bosch Rotak 32R is no exception.  Made almost entirely from plastic, you’d be forgiven for thinking that’s flimsy but it certainly isn’t.  What it is, is astonishingly lightweight weighing in at just 6.8 kg which means that it’s easy to pick up with just one hand.

Like all Bosch electric mowers it arrives partly assembled and takes less 15 minutes to put together – all you need to do is to attach the two halves of the grass box and attach the handle.  The only tool you’ll need is a screwdriver.

And whilst we’re talking about the handle it seems sensible to point out the main difference between this and the larger mowers in the Bosch range that we alluded to at the start of this review.

Apart from the next model up – the Bosch Rotak 34R – all the other models have the Ergoflex handle which adds two small upright handles to the main handle to give a variety of alternative hand positions.  This makes the larger models easier to manoeuvre when you’re cutting the grass but the smaller models, because they are so light, don’t need the fact that they aren’t present isn’t a problem.

The Bosch Rotak 32R shares many features with its bigger siblings.  The inset wheels and small plastic combs that guide grass towards the cutting blade found on the bigger models work just as well on the 32R allowing it to cut right up to the edge of your lawn as well as up to the edge of walls.

But how does it cut ?

In a word, brilliantly !

In our tests it cut long and short grass with ease and never failed to put all of the cuttings in to the 31 litre grass box.  Despite its lack of weight it still managed to leave a pleasing stripe on our lawn thanks to its rear roller.  This also had the added benefit of preventing scalping of the lawn in some of the rougher sections which was an added bonus.

Although small, the Bosch Rotak 32R is blessed with a surprisingly powerful 1200 Watt motor which drives an easily-replaced metal blade.  Although this is the baby of the family, it has a clever trick up its sleeve to enable it to punch above its weight.

The blade spins at a constant 3600 rpm and, if it senses that the blade is slowing down, perhaps due to trying to cut through longer grass, then torque to the motor is increased to compensate.  Bosch call this their PowerDrive technology and we like it.

The cutting height can be adjusted in three steps from 20 mm to 60 mm.  The adjustment is a little fiddly and requires the mower to be turn upside down but, to be honest, we set it once and just left it alone after that.

It would be nice if to be able to see into the grass box to work out how full it is as there’s no way to see the amount of grass cuttings without removing it but we’re splitting hairs.  This is a mower designed for small lawns and after a couple of cuts you’ll learn how much of the lawn you can cut before it needs emptying.

The grassbox is easy to remove and fit and the carrying handle is comfortable.  Like most electric lawnmowers these days it comes with a 10 metre power cable so you’ll probably need to use an extension lead to reach the bottom of your garden.  It does have cable clips so that you can store the cable on the mower when not in use and the handle does fold in half so that it takes up less room in your shed or garage.

If you’ve got a small garden then the Bosch Rotak 32R should be on the top of your shopping list and, at under £100, it’s excellent value for money.  Highly recommended.
